Lois J. Burns 96, Rochester, Indiana, and formerly of Marion, Indiana, passed away at 3:37 A.M. Monday, June 14, 2021 at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, Indiana.
She was born on November 17, 1924 in Tiosa, Indiana, the daughter of Oswald and Mable (Smith) Palmer. On June 22, 1946 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, she married Robert F. Burns. He preceded her in death on January 3, 2014. Lois was a veteran serving with the United States Army during World War II. She had been a telephone operator stationed in Los Alamos, New Mexico during the development of the atomic bomb.
Lois had been a homemaker. She was a member of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, had been a member of the Mississinewa 1812 reenactment in Marion, Indiana, and for years had volunteered at Marion General Hospital. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, quilting, and along with her husband enjoyed presenting Indian Folklore and Traditions to elementary school children.
Survivors include her children, Richard (Lana) Burns, Ninety Six, South Carolina, Jerry (Sue) Burns), Surprise, Arizona, Ruth Ayers, Raleigh, North Carolina, Robert (Stacie) Burns, Vernon, Indiana, Shirley (A.W.) Teel, Brunswick, Georgia, grandchildren, Michele (Phill) Davis, Stacey (Kevin) Henkel, Nicole Thurman, Jerry (Christie) Burns Jr., Krista Nash, Jennifer (Jim) Johnson, Elizabeth (Jack) Walker, Noah (Tina) Sanders, Brandon (Maggie Mohr) Burns, Jared Rayhon, Blake Rayhon, Haley Rayhon, brother, Floyd (Hazel) Palmer, Argos, Indiana, twenty two great grandchildren, thirteen great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lucy Burns, one grandson, one great grandchild, one great-great grandchild, siblings, Norene Billissitz, Norman Palmer, Esther Walsh, and Jim Palmer.
Private services will be observed at Richland Center Cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard.
