Kevelyn Urschel Obituary

Kevelyn Joanne Urschel 72, Rochester, Indiana, was called to Heaven on Thursday, July 7, 2022. Born October 4, 1949, in Hammond, Indiana to Wendel and Paula Shrum. “Kev” to all who knew her, was a sweet, kind, and giving woman who touched the lives of many.

Kev was a 1967 graduate of Crown Point High School. She was a Pioneer Girls camp counselor and in the CP Twirlers, Band Cadettes, and Booster Club. Kev loved to sew. Two of her uniquely designed dresses made it into the Home Economics Fashion Show.

Kev married her high school sweetheart Cary Stump on December 9, 1967, in Crown Point, Indiana and had three children: Darek Stump of Rochester, Kaci Stump-Liner of Fishers, Indiana (grandkids Griffin, Ella, Grissom), and Jason Stump of Indianapolis, Indiana (grandkids Kaylea, Aidan, Caleb).  She was totally dedicated to her children in all aspects of their lives. Kev worked at Hart, Schaffner and Marx and The News Stand while raising her children.

Kev married Ken Urschel on November 13, 1999, in Niagara Falls, NY. She gained a stepdaughter Karen Urschel-Carroll (grandkids Garrett, Brayden). “Ken and Kev” as they were known, enjoyed traveling and eating out. Despite being quiet and shy, Kev loved managing the karaoke portion of Ken’s music business. Other side jobs that kept Kev busy were sewing Vera Bradley items at Superior Sample, helping with the polls during voting, and handing out food samples at Kroger.

Kev loved people and animals. She enjoyed playing Bunco and Euchre with her girlfriends. She had fun being in the Red Hat Society-The Royal Anti-Ques. As a passionate animal lover, Kev would always take in strays and nurture them back to health. She would always stop alongside the road if she saw any animal needing help. Her love for all animals generated a house full of dogs and cats over the years. Every day she would sit and watch all the deer, birds, and squirrels in her backyard.

Kev was preceded in death by her father Wendel Shrum. She is survived by her mom, Paula Shrum, Crown Point, Indiana and her four sisters Carol, Sheila, Barb, and Wendy.

A celebration of Kev’s life will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local animal shelter. Or you can donate to have a memorial tree planted in memory of Kev by visiting the Zimmerman Bros Funeral Home website as well as expressing your condolences at www.zimmermanbrosfh.com Arrangements by Zimmerman Bros.
