Betty McGowen Obituary

Betty McGowen 94, Rochester, Indiana, passed away at 12:55 P.M. Sunday April 5, 2020, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Culver, Indiana.

She was born on February 13, 1926 in Kosciusko County, Indiana, the daughter of Elvan E. and Marie (Sutherlin) Snyder. On May 18, 1952, in South Bend, Indiana, she married Merle McGowen of Talma, Indiana. He preceded her in death on January 9, 2015.

Mrs. McGowen was a graduate of the International School of Business, Fort Wayne, Indiana and had formerly worked at the Times Theater, Public Service Indiana and for Topps Manufacturing in Rochester. She had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Talma Church, T.H.E. Home Extension Club, Fulton County Mental Health Association, Evergreen Rebekah Lodge and for many years sang with the Fulton County Chorus. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, loved gardening, crafting and scrap booking.

Survivors include her sons, Col. (Ret.) Michael P. (Janie) McGowen, Scipio, Indiana, David L. (Karen) McGowen, Rochester, Indiana, grandchildren, LTC Matthew (Laura) McGowen, Jennifer (SSG David) Herr, great grandchildren, Michael, Landon and Ryan Charles McGowen, June, Mikaela and Eliana Smith and Chloe and Clark Herr. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joyce (James) Thomas.

Private services will be observed. A public Celebration of Life memorial service will be announced for a later date. Burial will be in the Hamlet Cemetery, Talma, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church, Talma Church on the Tippecanoe River or the American Cancer Society.
