Richard Clay Obituary

Richard R. Clay 87, Rochester, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday July 3, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. at Woodbridge Health Campus, Logansport, Indiana.

He was born on October 18, 1930 in Rochester, Indiana, the son of Roy W. and Miriam G. (Hoover) Clay. After graduating from Rochester High School, Richard played trumpet for the Petrie Band touring across the country performing at various lodges and functions. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. While in the Navy, he played in the U.S. Navy Band with performances at the White House.

On July 31, 1964, He married Jean Anne (Kumler) Stewart. She preceded him in death on December 15, 1995. On Sept. 27, 1996 at the First Christian Church in Rochester, he married Nancy J. (Hopper) Lebo and she survives.

Richard had worked as a master carpenter in Chicago, Illinois, building many row houses and working on the construction of O’Hare International airport.  He then worked for the Chrysler Corporation as a machine operator retiring after twenty seven years. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge, Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, traveling and the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy J. Clay, Rochester, Indiana, children, Vince Stewart, Indianapolis, Indiana, Tony (Chim) Stewart, Indianapolis, Indiana, Libby (Dan) Mayes, Indianapolis, Indiana, David Clay (Susan Brumsfield) Terre Haute, Indiana, Mike (Sue) Lebo, Greensburg, Indiana, Gayle Rodriguez, Rochester, Indiana, Garrick Lebo, Middletown, Ohio, grandchildren, Alex Stewart, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jessie Stewart, Indianapolis, Indiana, Ayem Stewart, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jace Stewart, Syracuse, Indiana, Josh Mayes, Jodi Mayes, Jeri Ruetz, Danny Mayes, Jeanie Renollet, all of Indianapolis, Indiana, David Mayes, Chicago, Illinois, Holly Pauley, Bradenton, Florida, Cierra Clay, Terre Haute, Indiana, Jake Lebo, Dubai, U.A.E., Abby Lebo, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jennifer Fields, Stacy Small, Stephanie Bandow, Michaila Rodriguez, all of Rochester, Indiana, Garrett Lebo, Columbus, Ohio, Gwen Lebo, Dayton, Ohio, sixteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, sisters-in-laws, Barbara Swihart, Kay Payne, Edna Mae (Hopper) Bedford, Peggy Durkes and Donna Smith, all of Rochester, Indiana and his best canine friend, Oreo. He was preceded in death by his grandson, John R. Stewart and son-in-law, Mark Rodriguez.

Funeral services will be conducted at Noon Friday July 6, 2018 at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, Indiana, with Rev. Mike Van Heyningen officiating. Friends may visit from 10:00 A.M. to Noon Friday at the funeral home. Interment will take place later at Citizens Cemetery, Rochester, Indiana.
